Thinking out loud Empty Thinking out loud

    Post  squeeker 2009-09-17, 13:04

I've been chatting to the boss lady. And have been thinking of, if we eventually get down to the coast, selling the ute Shocked and replacing it with a toy car. Looking at a SWB MK/MQ (or even a early GQ/Mav if i can find one for the right price) if i can get one cheap the all the cash i get for the ute i will sink into the patrol, lift lockers and all the toys. I will be doing everything myself so i will be saving money there.

What do you think? It wont be till we get to the coast as It wont be a daily driver and we cant live with out 2 cars where we are now.

GQ wagon if you still want to do a few longer trips and touring. Maybe a GQ shorty if you're just after a toy.
If/when I buy another 4WD I don't think it will have leaf springs under it.

i like how he doesn't even give me the credit for the idea.....
anyway the only reason we would look at it is to be used as a toy only- road registered and able to take child seats so we can do beach runs etc or use it when we need it but not used regularly.

basically we figure that with abby being a while off much 4wding, and possibly looking at another one in the nearer future we aren't exactly likely to be going out very often, and as tony said we don't need 2 cars down there. once we look at touring again it would be replaced.

this way he can have a car that can be pulled to pieces on the weekend and not needed mondahy morning so he can pull it apart, rebuild it etc. and he can learn all this stuff on a car that doesn't owe us much.

Yeh whilst i would prefer a GQ (coils/better engines), the only problem is that the only cash i will have to spend is what i can get for the ute, so the cheaper option would be the MQ/K which would give me some more money to spend on toys for it.

I'd wait around for a GQ. Their values are dropping like lead balloons. Even the newest MQ/MK is 20+ years old so you'll have to spend some money to tidy it up.

I like them, but for not much more $$$ you get a much better starting point. Unless the budget is low AND it has to be a diesel. Diesel GQ patrols are overpriced and not worth the dollars people ask or pay for them IMO.

The money some owners are trying to get for their cars is a bit much in some instances.

There's a 1992 80 Series GXL Diesel (Non Turbo) for sale in town here at the moment that has done 270.000kms which isn't too bad and it does look tidy but it doesn't have many extras. The asking price though is $16,000.

Then there's this which probably isn't too bad at $20,000.
