    High Steer... Empty High Steer...

    Post  SJC4wd 2009-10-20, 09:52

Hi all, when High Steer is installed on the Hilux the original Torque rod is removed along with the bracket thats welded on the top of the diff...we all know its there to stop the axle from wraping...so whats stops this from happening when its removed?? scratch Is it the design of the High Steer that takes over this function ???

Steve the reason for the torque rod, is to stop the vehicle from diving to one side, when the springs lengthen under compression.
Without the torque rod, on a std setup, the steering will dive to the left as the springs compress/lengthen.
With the standard set up, the steering box moves the drag link forward and back, same as the springs.
But with the high steer, and IFS box, it moves side to side, and has no effect on steering when the springs do what springs are want to do.
Cruisers don't use a torque rod, because their steering box moves side to side.
    Hope this helps. wink

I think from memory about $920 plus $150 for the steering box.
Just make sure you get a IFS box from a 95 or earlier, if you are going to do it.

It turns out my steering box is out of a late model Surf.
You can tell by the amount of bolt holes, mine had four, and the correct one has three.
Personaly, I wouldn't bother with HS,just buy a heavy duty steering rod, unless you want the "Wank factor"
"Oh look at me I have a high steer"........The main reason I did mine was so I could fit a front U'bolt flip.
Lots of work, for little gain, different story if you need it for comps or such, but for general fourbying, go the HD link. ok
Just buy some stickers that say "I drive my 4B off road"....it's a lot cheaper. wink

Interesting words there Glen.. so really its not worth it unles its a full on comp truck...actully Ive seen some decent looking trucks..Hiluxes that retained the original set up...just running better components than OME.

Oz and I were talking about the H/D steering rods over the weekend... thinking

thanks for the comments, now Im a little more informed.

Only my opinion, there's bound to be some who disagree but my truck doesn't drive any differently than it did before.
Worse actually, because now I don't have a steering dampner.
So it was a wast of time/money in my case, for the tracks I do.
If I had my time over, I would go the HD steering rod route, only thing is, now I have my U' bolt flip. yep

I thought the biggest plus was that it made it easy to go RUF and not get the binding or bump when those longer leaves start to work.
